August 30, 2020: Today’s Thank You Note To God

Today I was blessed by a speaker who came to our Church service. His name is Eugene Hairston, also known as “THE TREE”. I believe he is 6’7″ tall…thus the nick name.

He told us his story of being a Vietnam Vet with PTSD and a alcoholic and drug addict…recovering now for over 20 years. He spoke of his time in Vietnam and what being a man of color during that era was like. He recounted how while in Vietnam, he had reported the misconduct of other military personnel which led to retaliation and how he had been thrown out of a helicopter and left for dead. He was rescued after lying in a rice field, afraid to move, for three days.

He spoke about returning to the US and turning to a life of crime, drugs and alcohol which resulted in being incarcerated numerous times, for numerous years. He spoke of how after his release from prison he had lived on the streets, sleeping in a refrigerator box for years and how eventually he ended up in a facility where he was cared for, properly diagnosed and treated for PTSD. His story was Amazing.

Mostly it was amazing to hear how God had been there throughout his life. He should have died from all the drugs he took, all the alcohol he drank, all the crimes he committed, a gun being put to his head and it not going off or he should have died when he was thrown from a helicopter but he didn’t.

Instead, God protected him, carried him and had his back throughout his life. Instead, God saved him and brought him through it all, to this moment, to our door step, so he could tell us his Amazing story of GRACE. God had a purpose for Eugene and he’s fulfilling it now.

In Isaiah 45:15 it says “Clearly you are a God who works behind the scenes, God of Israel, Savior God.”

So Today:

I thank God that He is always working behind the scenes of my life, your life and that of Eugene Hairston. You are an AMAZING GOD who sees us, hears us, knows us and still Loves and carries us, even when we can’t see you or feel you and especially when we don’t deserve it.

If you’d like to learn more about Mr. Hairston and how God was in his life, he has a book called A Quiet Voice.

What are you Thankful for today?

I’m sure God would love to hear from you and so would I.

Blessings, VICTORIA
